![]() I get that superpowered people find battle banter as casual as coffee chat, but audiences like me desire that little bit of melodramatic tension in action scenes to keep us on the edge of our seats.Īs both a love letter to, and a satire of, classically styled comic books, Henchman Story‘s expressive character designs have a vivid comic book look. The slice-of-life scenes were well-acted, but several action sequences had characters reciting their lines as if they were chatting over coffee rather than in the thick of tense battles. I also found the voice acting somewhat inconsistent. ![]() To be a henchman, you have to be able to take the pain.Īlthough Henchman Story is fully voiced, it doesn’t mask the lacking story elements. In my view, if there is any game out there absolutely begging for DLC, it is Henchman Story. Said ending left me with more questions than answers because it didn’t offer necessary additional context. This sentiment was strongest for one of the more intriguing endings I got. I yearned for lengthier storyline scenarios, more expansive world building, deeper character development (in terms of interactions and backstories), additional screen time for various side characters (more Dave, Miss Dynamo, and Nightingale, please), and all the other fixings of a thicker plot. As engaging as my experience with Henchman Story was, however, it was all too brief and left me wanting more. The vibrant characters all have snappy, if occasionally potty-mouthed, dialogue, and I’m sure every player will find a favorite. Henchman Story has action and drama befitting a superhero comic, but the biggest story highlights were easily its slice-of-life moments. Some endings are far more challenging to get than others, and that is part of the fun of the genre. A single playthrough took me less than a day to get through, and I achieved 100% completion over a weekend. With this in mind, I present to you Henchman Story: a comic book-styled visual novel that puts you in the shoes of Stan, a surprisingly self-aware henchman who works for a B-tier supervillain named Lord Bedlam.Īs a visual novel, Henchman Story is a Choose Your Own Adventure-style game where players are fed a story and make decisions at key junctures, leading to about a dozen endings. But within every henchman’s uniform lies an actual person simply doing a job, albeit a tireless, thankless, dangerous, and woefully unappreciated one. To any of us, they’re merely nameless and faceless cannon fodder for heroes to trounce and evil overlords to take out their frustrations on. Though a breakthrough makes itself known when Renfield realizes that if he stops feeding Dracula, he won't grow to full power, he still has to risk invoking the wrath of his bloodthirsty employer.Nobody ever gives a second thought to all those poor, unfortunate, downtrodden henchmen out there. ![]() This new, more sympathetic version of Renfield is ready to cease his unending job of providing Dracula with new bodies to feed off of, wanting his everyday life back once and for all. What was an apparent lie in the original story proves to be Renfield's source of strength in this new adaptation, turning Renfield into a would-be superhero who is still faithful to Dracula. This begs the question of how Renfield is still alive over a hundred years later if he's still an average human, but that gets potentially answered when Renfield takes a bite out of a spider, giving him superhuman abilities to take down a group of armed robbers. Renfield and Dracula (played by Nicolas Cage) may still be from that 19th-century period, as they both look pretty out of place with their proper Victorian clothing. These events took place all the way back in the 19th century, and as we see in the first trailer for Renfield, the new take on the Dracula mythos takes place in the modern day. According to Renfield, he gains eternal life by consuming live animals like spiders and rats, but this was likely a deception by Dracula to earn his loyalty. Otherwise known as a familiar, Renfield has promised his undying servitude to the bloodthirsty dark lord in exchange for eternal life. For one, it's true that at some point, Renfield became Dracula's thrall. Seward during his stay at a mental asylum, but there are quite a few details we can glean from him. The only things we learn about Renfield's past are his sessions with Dr. Likely is the keyword here as, in the original novel, Renfield's origins are a bit of a mystery. Hoult has played it all over the years, from benevolent superheroes to maniacal villains, and for Renfield, he'll be taking advantage of both roles.īefore meeting the nefarious vampire known as Dracula, Renfield was an average man, likely one with his own goals and aspirations. Renfield is Nicholas Hoult, the star of X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Menu.
